Tree Hazards

Is That Leaning Tree Dangerous? How to Tell

Some leaning trees have stood that way for decades. Others are falling this season. The difference is readable — if you know where to look.

Few tree questions cause more quiet worry than the lean. Homeowners watch a tilted tree for years, never quite sure if they're looking at a personality quirk or a countdown. The good news: the tree tells you, and the tells are specific.

Old lean vs. new lean

The single most important question isn't how much a tree leans — it's whether the lean is new. A tree that grew up tilted has spent decades building corrective wood and root structure to compensate; many stand safely for a lifetime at angles that look alarming. A tree that has recently started leaning is a different story entirely: something that was holding it has let go.

If you can't say whether the lean is new, look for the evidence around the base.

Read the ground, not the trunk

The root zone is where a failing lean announces itself. Soil heaving or cracking on the side opposite the lean means the root plate is lifting — the tree is actively in the process of uprooting. Fresh cracks radiating from the trunk, a mound that wasn't there last season, or roots newly exposed where soil has pulled away all say the same thing: movement.

A leaning tree with a quiet, undisturbed root zone is a watch item. A leaning tree with lifting soil is a call-today item.

The canopy and trunk have a vote too

Lean combined with other defects multiplies the risk. A leaning tree that's also dropping dead limbs, showing fungal shelves at the base, or carrying a trunk crack is not three separate concerns — it's one tree describing its own failure from several angles at once.

What it's standing over settles the urgency

Risk is the tree's condition multiplied by its target. The same borderline leaner over open pasture is a monitoring decision; over a bedroom, a driveway, or a play area, it's an assessment worth booking now. Trees don't choose fall direction politely, but lean direction is the leading indicator.
